Good alcohol free drinks, aside from cordials and soft drinks, have historically been difficult to come by. They can be too sweet or just plain bad, but over the last few years, they have come along in leaps and bounds. Here are a few of the alcohol free drinks we’ve tried and enjoyed, this festive season.
Moderato
has created a range of award-winning alcohol-free wines that might just keep the non-drinkers and designated drivers much happier this festive season.
Moderato Cuvee Revolutionnaire Chardonnay
£14.50
This alcohol free Chardonnay is full of juicy white stone fruit, citrus, and just a hint of toasted almonds, to create a flavourful glass that will keep you sharp and satisfied this Christmas.
The golden colour catches the light nicely, and leads nicely to the bright flavours within. It’s crisp and refreshing and has some complexity and elegance, making it a pretty close competitor to a full-alcohol version.

Moderato Cuvee Revolutionnaire Colombard
£14
Made from hand-selected Colombard grapes, this bright wine has a great colour, which matches the fruity, aromatic nose. It’s vibrant and crisp, with apples and pears and just a hint of floral notes, too.
It is dry and sharp, but the hints of honeyed fruit keep it reasonably balanced. The lime and citrus bring a touch of acidity. A nice accompaniment to seafood or white meats.
Moderato Cuvee Revolutionnaire Merlot-Tannat
£14
This blended wine made from Merlot and Tannat grapes has a deep garnet colour, which is perfect for the festive season. It’s smooth and velvety, and packed with juicy dark fruits and cherries from the off. There’s a hint of vanilla on the nose, which follows through onto the palate. There are some warming spices on the palate, too, which keep the sweetness down nicely. It has a dryness that works well, bringing the acidity you’d expect from a red wine.
Not a bad alcohol free wine, but it does lack a little depth and complexity. It would make a great pairing with the cheese plate or a Boxing Day turkey curry.

Moderato Cuvee Revolutionnaire Blanc de Noir
£18
This alcohol free sparkling wine is made from Merlot grapes from the Bordeaux region. On the nose, there are plenty of juicy fruits, with just a hint of almond. There is some sweetness, but on the palate, fine bubbles give a creamy mouthfeel, and there is just enough acidity to balance the mouthful, keeping it just the right side of sweet. The finish is long and fruity, inviting you back for another vibrant mouthful.
For a dealcoholised sparkling wine, it has some depth and a little complexity, making it a nice glass for a festive celebration. A great match for a light salad, seafood or an indulgent dessert.
Westons Stowford Press Low Alcohol Cider
8x500ml bottles, £15
Stowford Press is part of the Westons Cider family, where cider has been made, in one form or another, since 1880. Still independently owned and operated by the 5th generation of the family, the range includes some fabulous ciders, including a low alcohol (0.5% ABV) offering under the Stowford Press umbrella.

If you’re a cider fan, but have avoided low alcohol offerings, fearing they would be a let-down, then think again. Stowford Press LA is bright, crisp and bursting with juicy apples. On the palate, there are notes of honey and fragrant, floral apple blossom, which add some depth to the flavour. The sweetness of the apples is there, but not overwhelming, and is balanced well by the gentle acidity, walking a fine line between being too sweet and too dry beautifully.
It’s easy to drink, refreshing, and while you’re unlikely to mistake it for a full-strength cider, you certainly won’t write it off as apple juice. Stowford Press Low Alcohol Cider is an excellent choice to add to your alcohol free drinks selection for anyone wanting that cider hit without the hangover.
Goram IPA Zero
12x330ml bottles, £17
For those preferring an IPA, Butcombe Brewery has created a low-alcohol version of its Goram IPA. Using the same base recipe as the fully-fledged version, Goram Zero contains less than 0.5% alcohol.

Combining hops from the UK, New Zealand, and the US with malted barley and wheat, this delicious alcohol free IPA beautifully balances bitter notes with tropical fruit and citrus hints. The carbonation is fairly light, but the tiny bubbles give it a creamy mouthfeel.
Goram IPA Zero is an excellent alcohol free IPA that you’ll be happy to drink, with all the flavour of a standard Goram IPA.
