If you’re ever settled down to watch an episode of Channel 4’s Taskmaster and thought, “I could do better than that!” here’s your chance to prove it with a live experience. This summer, English Heritage has teamed up with the challenge-setting show, encouraging you to put your imagination and creativity to the test at 17 of its UK locations. We headed to beautiful Wrest Park
in Bedfordshire to see which of us was worthy of winning Greg Davis’s face.
Finding things to keep the kids, and you, entertained for the summer holidays without costing the earth can be a challenge in itself, so when we heard about the Taskmaster team-up, we were in! As long-term fans of the show, and more recently of Junior Taskmaster and the Taskmaster board game, we knew that no matter what happened, we’d be in for a good day. And we were right.
The idea is a simple one: The Taskmaster team has devised six challenges which are scattered throughout the grounds of the venue for you and your fellow competitors to find. Once you’ve visited the first location and gathered your clipboards and scorecard, there are no hard and fast rules – you can take the tasks in whatever order to find them. With one of your party nominated to be the Taskmaster’s assistant’s assistant (AKA the one in charge of scoring), you can let the mayhem commence.
We’re not going to give away too much — all of the information is in the tasks, and we’d hate to give any of you an unfair advantage — but be sure to leave your dignity at the gate and embrace the competitive spirit. Each task is as physically demanding as you choose to make it, so it’s truly something the whole family can enjoy. From grandparents to pre-schoolers, everyone can get involved.
And just how much does this cost, I hear you cry. That’s the best part – the Taskmaster experience is included with the cost of your entry ticket to the English Heritage property. A visit to Wrest Park is a full day of entertainment for the whole family, with expansive grounds for the little ones to roam, play areas, mini golf, and a ball run for them to build and enjoy. Family tickets (for 2 adults and up to 3 children) are priced at £46.30 and everything on site, including Taskmaster, is covered.
For the adults, there are the colourful gardens and state rooms of the mansion to explore, before you all head to the cafe for some much-needed refreshments, or enjoy a picnic in the grounds.
Each of the sites hosting the Taskmaster live experience has something unique for the family to enjoy. From the delights of Framlingham Castle and the mystique of Stonehenge to the grandeur of Wrest Park, you’ll go home with weary legs and happy smiles all around — we most certainly did.
