Sir David Attenborough, the legend of British broadcasting, turns 100 on the 8th of May 2026, and in celebration of that milestone, Puzzle This has created a jigsaw that not only honours the naturalist but also raises money for the charity which is close to his heart.
A jigsaw puzzle might sound like an odd thing to be immortalised in, but this is no ordinary jigsaw. The puzzle, entitled Narrator of Nature
, has been created by Kenyan-born artist James Vaulkhard and is a portrait of Sir David, built up from layer upon layer of images depicting the natural world he is so passionate about.
The images themselves are from 19th-century zoological drawings, lovingly recycled to create the portrait. Many months of painstakingly selecting the right pieces of the drawings, trimming and glueing them into place, have culminated in this extraordinary work.
Once completed, the portrait was reproduced as a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle by Puzzle This, a company founded by Vaulkhard and designer Rick Legget, with the mission of creating visually striking puzzles that are absorbing and engaging for puzzlers.
Rather than simply being a puzzle to solve, Vaulkard and Legget hope that people will be drawn into the puzzle itself, discovering the images within the image and taking the time to thoughtfully explore the pieces as they develop into the portrait.
As well as being a fitting tribute to a beloved environmentalist, each puzzle sold will result in a £5 donation to the charity WWF, of which Sir David has been an ambassador for many years.
The funds will help WWF to continue its work around the world, leading global conservation efforts, protecting biodiversity and creating a future where humans and animals can live in harmony.
